Interaction with Sound

February 22, 2011 Leave a comment

I would like to use our hearing to create an interaction sound project to explore humans’ emotion.
Imagine yourself alone, close your eyes and pay attention to what’s around you. What do you hear? Is it appealing? Or is it disturbing?

The rule is simple, please listen to the soundtrack through earphone with your eyes closed then write down whatever come to your mind or your feeling with couple words instead of sentences

FOR WHOEVER HAS A WORDPRESS ACCOUNT, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR COMMENT THERE!!
THANK YOU!

Project#5- Good Copy of Important Action

I know how to use my time wisely”

For my Important Action video, I wanted to show the action of  multitasking. I think we are living in a busy and competitive society now; meaning that everything  we do are in fast paste, and we tend to multi-task a lot in order to reach the deadline of a task; to survive in a work field; or just to keep up with a fast paste routine.

Project#4- Urban Intervention

March 10, 2010 Leave a comment

My idea for Urban Intervention is playing with the text instead of an image.

” My world is black and white; but I equalize what I see”, what I meant by ” Black and White” is the colour of black plus white equals to the neutral grey which to me this is the colour of safety zone.

As for ” but I Equalize What I see”, what I meant by that is Canada is a multicultural country, because I am so used to seeing different races of people in Vancouver that I think everyone is equal, and I know what it feels like to be insulted with racial comments or behaviors.

The reason I decided to put the sign in Emily Carr University is because there are people from around the world studying in this school and everyone here are very friendly and open-minded, so in a way I want my sign to interact with whoever passed by showing that ” I am part of this community, and I respect everyone that’s around me.”

Barking Mad by Suzie Webster and Jordan Benwick

February 24, 2010 Leave a comment

Barking Mad, a collaborate project by Suzie Webster and Jordan Benwick. This installation was displayed in Code Live 2, at Emily Carr University of Art and Design for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic.

Barking Mad is an interactive clothing that is designed to be a survival coat to help people overcome shyness in crowds. Inside the collar of the coat, there is a build-in proximity sensor that sense others when they come across the personal space, and the result of that is the coat will play a sound of barking dogs through flat panel micro speakers embedded in the coat. The volume of the sounds depends on the distances; for example; the coat barks like a small poodle in farther distances, and like a rottweiler if someone gets too close.

Barking Mad was displayed nearby the reception area of Concourse Gallery at Emily Carr University, I didn’t find it to be attractive or repulsive to the location, but I thought it was interesting to know that the project is interactive and seeing the coat on a manikin along with other wearable projects.

I think the idea behind this project is interesting because we are living in a community that make us have no choice but to somehow interact with others on daily basis, which makes “ communication” really important. If a coat like this can really make people over come shyness it would be wonderful, but in my opinion, I don’t think the coat would make people overcome shyness in speaking, but perhaps the coat will make people expend their comfort zone towards crowds when it comes to personal space.

I think the barking sounds are brilliant. The coat does not just make the person that wears it uncomfortable but also catch peoples’ attention when they encounter it. When I think about barking, I think about the signs “ beware of dogs” at someone’s house gate. And that also make me wonder, even if such a coat is proofed that people can overcome shyness by wearing it, would some people be offended by it then? It seems like artist is putting humor into the art, like playing a little prank to the public.

When I was writing this review, I did a research on the project and that is how I got a better understanding of the purpose behind it, but at the same time, I was also a bit confused if I should review it as an art work, or a product since the result I found during my research was that  “ the coat helps overcome shyness”; but overall, I think the work is pretty successful because it definitely shows the art is dealing with personal space issue. I think it would be even better, if it was presented as a performance art, for example, having the artist walking around the exhibition wearing the coat.

Random thoughts

January 28, 2010 2 comments

I just want to say……

I think its weird to find little kids that are under 12 having their own Facebook pages.

I don’t recall myself knowing how to use a computer or internet  when I was 12 years old;

what happened to the good old  ”go out and play with your neighbours” routine?

am I just getting old? or what?

Project#3- Hyperlocal narrative, mapping and mobility

For my project#3 , the site I choose for this project is Kids Market that’s situated nearby the entrance of Grandville Island.  When I think about Grandville Island, I think about children running. to me, the market is like a reality version of the ” Neverland” from ” Peter Pan”, and  I don’t remember seeing any unhappy child at the kids market.

There is too much going on in my head that these are some of the possible sounds I might be using for this project. Such as; children’s’ laughter, kids having conversation with each other, “ chu chu train”, whatever I get in the market, etc

The motivation behind this project is the people around me. I was really inspired by my friends Lia who is a mother of two; Dao and Ada, who both just had their first child (Tristan and Lylica); Tiffany, a mother soon to be, and a little girl name Caelyn.

I want people to be joyful through kids’ laughter (in another word, when they laugh, you laugh too). I want people to remember Grandville Island as a place that is not just about tourists, artists, but also a safe environment for children to be at, and whenever they hear children running or the sound from arcades, they will think of Kids Market.

Project#2- Panorama

January 13, 2010 Leave a comment

Sunday night 6:00 P.M., I was ready to take photos for my panorama project at Fort Langley; I thought people would be gone by then because the town is usually pretty quite after 5:00 p.m., instead, cars just kept coming and it was raining pretty harsh that night. Good thing Cheenou came with me, so we just hang out at a coffee shop till it closed.

11:30 P.M., it has finally stopped raining, the town was beautiful. Originally, I wanted to take a night scene at a cemetary, but all these little shops fascinated me so much it just changed my mind.

1:13 A.M., we were finally done with shootings , and I feel satisfied.
